Regulation

Foreword
Modena Province, in order to encourage the application of web and computer technologies to artistic creation and Internet software programming, promotes the second edition of aniMOweb, a contest in the production of interactive animations and applications. As in the previous edition, it also aims at advertising the people and companies taking part in the contest through the publication of their works both in the site www.animoweb.it and in a cd-rom.
The subject proposed for 2003 edition is about environmental and ecological themes, in particular air pollution. The aim is also to promote environmental policies on a provincial and regional basis through the internet.

Requisites
The contest is international and there are no limits in age or occupation for participants.

What the Contest is about
Three sections, two of which are re-proposed from the previous edition, have been established:

  • Section A):
    theme -> Environment: virtues and vices;
    type -> animated intro
    destination -> publication into the cd-rom for the report on the state of the environment, Modena Province site, AniMOweb site
  • Section B):
    theme -> Environment: virtues and vices;
    type -> videogames, highly interactive applications
    destination -> publication into the cd-rom for the report on the state of the environment, Modena Province site, AniMOweb site
  • Section C):
    theme -> Air pollution;
    type -> animated short film
    destination -> publication into the cd-rom for the report on the state of the environment, Modena Province site, AniMOweb site

How to take part
- Each author or company can present a maximum of one entry for sections A and B and up to 3 entries for section C
- The format of the files can only be:
Macromedia Flash (swf format, to be viewed with Flash player)
Macromedia Director Shockwave (format dcr, to be viewed with Shockwave player)
- Dimensions of the swf or dcr files:
Section A) -> a maximum dimension of 300 Kb is proposed.
Section B) -> a maximum dimension of 1Mb is proposed.
Section C) -> a maximum dimension of 10Mb is proposed.
- Some guidelines for sections A and B have been singled out: a set of images (and texts) about the themes of the contest can be downloaded from the site www.animoweb.it.
The entries for both these sections will have to contain at least one or more of these proposed images. They can be modified/rearranged in any way.
A set of instructions and further directions on how to take part in the contest will be included in the download files with the guidelines mentioned above.
No guidelines are established for section C and the only restriction is the proposed theme of air pollution.

Submission of works
The materials will have to be submitted from March, 31st 2003 and not beyond July, 31th 2003 via e-mail as attached files to concorso.animoweb@provincia.modena.it. They can also be sent in a masterized cd-rom via ordinary mail or delivered to the address: Provincia di Modena - Ufficio stampa - Concorso Animoweb - to the attention of Andrea Cavazzuti - Viale Martiri della Libertà, 34 - 41100 Modena - Italy. The contest organizers retain the right to postpone the submission deadline. The postponement will be advertised on the site www.animoweb.it.
The author will have to enclose the application form that can be downloaded from the same site.

Judging panel
The jury will be composed of experts on webdesign, videogames, internet communication and animation cinema professionals, representatives of the sponsors and promoters of the contest. The evaluation parameters will be:
- originality
- quality and fluency of the animations
- playability and quality of interactivity (for videogames and highly interactive applications of section B)
- use of sound and in particular its synchronicity with the visual part
- relevancy to the proposed theme
- dimensions of the files.
The judging panel evaluation will be incontrovertible.

Prizes and declaration of winners
The total budget is of € 7.800 for 12 prizes. The winners for each section will receive: € 1500 if first place winners, € 700 if second place and € 300 if third place. A further "audience prize" of € 100 will be assigned for each section to those who will receive the votes of site www.animoweb.it visitors/viewers. Viewers can express their on-line vote during the time that will be announced in the site news later on. Each computer will be able to send only one preference. The contest organizers retain the right to cancel with incontrovertible decision the irregular votes of viewers. Further prizes such as publications, books, free subscriptions to Modena Province magazines will be assigned to all entrants.
The prizes assignment will take place during a public ceremony. During this ceremony the winning works will be performed on a video screen.

Site of the contest
www.animoweb.it is the site of the contest. In this site it will be possible to find all the information about the contest and to download the files containing the reference guidelines and instructions for submissions. Information can be requested also by writing to info.animoweb@provincia.modena.it or calling telephone nr. 0039 059 209362. All entries will be periodically published in the site.
The site will host an appropriate space for each author or company with biographical notes and links to other internet sites from the same.

Cd-rom
A cd-rom with the winning works together with the whole or a partial selection of the other entries (depending on the number of participants) will be produced. It will be free and advertised in the site www.animoweb.it.

Responsibilities
The participation in the contest implies the acceptance of this regulation without reserve. The entries remain the property of their authors or companies. However, these allow the free use of their works on the part of Modena Province, for unlimited time, both for the publication on the sites www.animoweb.it, www.provincia.modena.it, on the cd-roms that will be produced after the contest, and for the public performance during the award ceremony.
The content of the submissions have to be selected in accordance with the Copyright laws. Any violation is the exclusive responsibility of the author, as declared in the application form. The contest organizers retain the right to exclude from the contest with incontrovertible decision the submissions violating Copyright laws.
In addition, the contest organizers retain the right to exclude from the contest with incontrovertible decision the works considered offensive or damaging the image of the sponsoring institutions.

Saturday, 11th March, the prize awarding of aniMOweb 4th Edition took place at Teatro San Carlo, after the preceding week devoted to film reviews at Sala Truffaut, seminars and meetings with the authors and the jury members at Istituto Fermi and Teatro San Carlo.

Thursday, 9th March the movies of aniMOweb were shown to the students of the Modenese schools. Friday, 10th March, and Saturday, 11th March, were the concluding days of the 4th edition of the festival: the meetings and the seminars of the contestants and special guests of the jury took place at Aula Magna Istituto Fermi and San Carlo Theatre.

Writer, teacher at university masters and event organiser, he has created two editorial series on video games criticism. They are unique in their genre and were devised to recount, study and extend the knowledge about video games in Italy. AniMOweb editorial staff has interviewed him, focusing attention on the themes of the 4th edition of the contest and in particular on the relationship between videogames and violence, between war and peace videogames.

30th June 2005 - The fourth edition of AniMOweb opens and the theme is about peace
Thursday, 30th June a.m. the press conference, which officially opens the 4th edition of aniMOweb on the conflicts and themes of peace and war, takes place at 11.30 in the Palace of Modena Province. The contributors are the Councillor for Culture Beniamino Grandi and the representatives of CSV (Centro Servizi Volontariato) of Modena together with the editorial staff of aniMOweb, Andrea Cavazzuti and Cristina Poppi.

1st June 2005 - 4th Edition of aniMOweb on the themes of War and Peace
The 4th edition of aniMOweb on the theme "CONFLICTS: THE CULT OF WAR AND THE CULTURE OF PEACE" is going to start. The event is promoted by Modena Province, main sponsor of the contest since 2002. The co-sponsor for this edition is Centro Servizi Volontariato (CSV) of Modena, which boasts a long experience of activity with Associations of Volunteers dealing with themes like peace, human rights and solidarity.
