THE MOVIES
During the last week of aniMOweb, two events with the performing of films on ENVIRONMENTAL THEMES and DIGITAL CREATIVITY took place, thus reconciling in a cross-referential way the topics of aniMOweb 2003.
These films accompanied the projection of the films submitted for the contest, which were inserted in a DVD to allow a cinema full screen vision.
Wednesday, 22nd October at Sala Truffaut Cinema, Modena, Via Adelardi a preview of all the films, aniMOweb films included, took place in a marathon from 5 p.m. to 12 p.m.
Saturday, 25th October some of these movies together with all the films submitted for the contest were re-proposed at San Carlo Theatre in Modena. This was the afternoon before the official prize awarding ceremony presented by Carlo Massarini.
Here is the list of the films offered by the sponsor Focus Lab, a Modenese research centre as well as a consulting agency for sustainable development projects and actions:

DOCUMENTARY FILM "DREAM MACHINE TV"
Introducing itself as "The final resource on digital art", "Dream Machine TV" is a documentary film created by Lorenzo Miglioli (www.mimic.it), with the cooperation of Andrea Toniolo, Mauro Gatti and Giulio Fregni. It aims at presenting, in TV format, showcases of the most famous web artists in the world and at portraying the panorama of digital art. By using network technologies, young authors from all over the world are producing artworks that look like films, cartoons, TV programs, computer games, since these are the products and genres with which they have been growing up. Thus, the documentary explores the NETWORKING GENERATION, that is the first interactive generation in the history of media production. These young people think, organise, and hand out their works - via web - to art networks all over the world. The documentary lasts 100 minutes and was broadcast for the first time in Italy by the channel RaiSat Arte in June. The Biennale of Visual Arts in Venice, which co-produces the film together with RaiSat Arte, exhibits it permanently in the ASAC - Archivio Storico dell'Arte Contemporanea - pavilion.

PRINCESS MONONOKE
This masterpiece of director Hayao Miyazaki was produced in 1997 and won the Japanese award equivalent to Oscar. The 2003 Oscar winning film Spirited Away followed.
Based on a Japanese legend, Princess Mononoke is the animated story of a war that opposes men to gods for the conquest of nature. With a lyric quality and a mystical style, this animation film is set in medieval Japan in a time of great changes, samurai warriors and scattered villages, each hundreds of miles far away from the other. The Great God of the Forest, a mythical creature, bestows power on the other forest gods, which have the form of enormous beasts, to protect their realm from men.
A war devastates this land and Ashitaka, a courageous warrior, is involved in the fight between men and the animals. He tries to convince the two parties to find a solution to end this spiral of violence and to establish a common territory where the creatures of the forest and men can live together in peace. Princess Mononoke is a young woman raised by wolves. She is ready to die in order to defeat the humans and save the forests and the animals to which she has devoted her life.

CAR CRAZE
First work of Dutch director Evert de Beijer. It is a short film produced with 3D animation software with a special mention from the jury of 2003 Annecy Animation Festival. Produced by CinéTé Filmproduktie, ARTE France and RNTV, Car Craze is the Dutch proposal for the Animation Oscar award. The main theme is air pollution caused by cars. An environment inspector is controlling a city area dominated by monstrous cars. His short stay at a motel is distressing: he discovers that the cars evolve in a kind of parasitic life charming the human beings and feeding on the vital fruits of the earth.

THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES
Directed by the Canadian director Frederick Back and based on a story by Jean Giono, this medium-length movie lasting 30 minutes is produced by Societè Radio Canada and won the Academy Award for animated films in 1988.
The main character of this ecological fairy tale, Elzéard Bouffier, after living the difficult life of a farmer and after losing his only child and his wife, withdraws in a silent and slow loneliness. He re-afforests alone a large part of Provence in France in the time between the two World Wars. Elzéard, however isolated and reticent, spends each single day sowing oaks, maples and beeches. He believes his country will die for the lack of trees. Year by year, meticulous and precise, he plants an entire forest in lands cursed by ruin and desolation. With the new trees a new sense of civilisation and progress thrives. Elzéard sows, works, loves without considering fatigue, without expecting rewards. His reward is in the self same gesture of giving.
